November 11: Saint Mennas

Saint Mennas was an Egyptian, a Christian and  Soldier.  During the persecution of the emperors Diocletian and Maximian, he had withdrawn to a lonely spot to do penance, but on the emperor's birthday he appeared suddenly in the theater where the populace was enjoying an elaborate spectacle.  In a loud voice he inveighed against the superstitions of the Gentiles.  For this he was arrested, and placed in fetters...   The Breviary goes on the recount his martyrdom for preaching against the superstitions of the Gentiles.
