Let us pray to God to cure our wills, to turn misfortunes from our heads, to spare us from hail, drought, pestilence, and the fury of our enemies: let us pray for good weather, health, peace, and the remission of our sins. Saint Mamertus.

May 11: Saint Mamertus

Saint Mamertus introduced the Processions called  Rogations.  Commenting on this holy practice, he said:  Let us pray to God to cure our ills, to turn misfortunes from our heads, to spare us from hail, drought, pestilence, and the fury of our enemies: let us pray for good weather, health, peace, and the remission of our sins.
In Butler's  Lives of the Saints , we read:  Can we hope that God will hear our prayers if we only ask Him for what will entertain us in the kingdom of the devil: not His grace, but the things of this world, and their objects of our irregular passions?  Such petitions are not prayers, but disordered desires.  We would add that this request for worldly goods to entertain us is an insult to God and in many cases a serious sin.
PRAYER: Saint Mamertus, lead us to pray for all our needs and to thank God for His many blessings.  Amen.
