May 10: Saint Isidore the Laborer
Butler's Lives of the Saints tells us: Many object that their labors and fatigues leave them little time for the exercises of religion. But Isidore, by directing his attention according to the most holy motives of faith, made his work a most perfect act of religion. He considered it as a duty to God. Therefore he applied himself to it with great diligence and care, in imitation of the angels in heaven, who in all things fulfill the will of God with the greatest readiness and devotion. The more humble and the more painful the work was, the more this saint liked it, being a way to tame his flesh, and a better penance.
In reward God sometimes sent the angels to help him plow and miraculously saved his son from a well. His goodness extended to all the poor and even to the little birds, which he fed with grain during the winter. Let us learn from Saint Isidore the necessity of conformity to the will of God in our state of life. Notice how much God does for those who follow His will without question!
PRAYER: Saint Isidore, God saved your son from a well, save us from the well of ignorance and error. Amen.
