January 14th: Saint Hilary

Saint Hilary ...  presented a request to the emperor, called, his second book to Constantius, begging the liberty to hold a public disputation about religion with Saturninus, the author of his banishment.  He presses him to receive the unchangeable apostolic faith, injured by the late changes, and smartly rallies the fickle humor of the heretics, who were perpetually making new creeds, and condemning their old ones, having made four within the last year; so that faith was become that of the times, not that of the gospels, and that there were as many faiths as men,   as a great variety of doctrine as of manners, as many blasphemies as vices.  Sound familiar?  This is what is happening today, although the various faiths no longer condemn each other, but condemn us for teaching that there is only one Faith that can save your soul, the Catholic Faith.  All other faiths today teach that salvation is found everywhere and in the profession of any faith.   Why not choose one that allows the use of drugs, as some American Indian religions do?  No, let us protest with Saint Hilary that we will only follow the Catholic Faith and live the Catholic way of life.

Prayer: Saint Hilary, lead us to the only saving Faith and to the practice of virtue in that Faith.  Amen.
