April 2: Saint Francis of Paula
He founded an order, and made a fourth vow obligatory upon members to observe a perpetual Lent . They always abstained from meat, foods made from milk and eggs all of which the ancient Church law forbade to be eaten during Lent. His intention in requiring this perpetual abstinence was to make reparation for the abuses of Lent among Christians. He always was saddened to see that the Holy fast was so relaxed by changes in the Church law. How would he be saddened today, when we do not even abstain from sin during Lent, but add a thousand new sins every Lent?
PRAYER: Lead us to observe Lent and our whole lives as we should, Saint Francis. Amen.
